For a bit, I was involved with a guy who originally came from Germany, and he always talked to me about how there was such a huge contrast between East and West Germany, even in the 2000s. He said the effects of communism still lingered, but no one wants to talk about when the communist dream of the Soviet Union was an occupying power, and how it turned everything in to a miserable dystopia. He said you can cross the street and it would be as if you entered a Third World country.
A large crowd gathered in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv to witness the toppling of a statue of former Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin. The statue of Lenin, the largest one in Ukraine, was pulled down by ropes in front of a jubilant crowd waving the Ukrainian flag and singing the national anthem.
